GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONGKONG. 2nd. June, 1917.

sir.

Despatches:

Secretary of State's No. 186)

of 30th June 1911.99 Governor's No. 19 of 8th.

January, 1912.

2 Secretary of State's No. 337 of 8th. November, 1912. 10 Governor's No. 36 of 31st.

January, 1913. Gov

655413

With reference to the correspondence noted

in the margin, I have the honour to

request your authority to increase, at

any rate for the duration of the war, the

@limit of value of the Standard Stock for

12

the Public Works Department from $100,000

to $200,000 exclusive of the book value

of the Dredger "St. Thoch" which at present stands in the

stock books at $135,000.

2.

It is found that the annual issue of

"Unallocated Stores during the past 7 years averages $190,000

in value. The present limit of $100,000 represents, therefore,

only 6 months' stock which, having regard to the long delay in completing indents through the Crow Agents from this

-

Colony averaging as it does about 9 months to the absence of any alternative source of quick supply and to the higher local cost, is no longer sufficient.

3.

The temporary excess authorised in Mr. Sar (now Viscount) Harcourt's Despatch No. 337 of the 8th, of 3593 November, 1912, should at the same time continue.

I have the honour to be, Sir,

Your most obedient,

humble servant,

7.

Governor,ko..

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

WALTER LONG, M.P.,
